This week was the hammer. First we visited a highlight for all Panamerican travelers: Salar de Uyuni. You can't image how huge this salt flat is.
We drove for hours following only the trails of previous cars and seeing nothing but salt and the blue sky. In the afternoon we reached our goal in the desert the Isla Incahuasi. It is a rock full of cactuses. As we drove around we found us as the only 2wd car in the middle of Landcruisers.
Doing a little walk around the island with fantastic views, we later built up our Camp-let just next to the island. And as we saw the sunset we were the only ones with thousands of stars.
Although this was our coldest night (-12 degrees) it wasn't heavy to get up in the morning, as Camp-let works with the big windows like a wintergarden and was already heated up from the sun ;)
Driving through a heavy thunderstorm close to the city Potosi on 4000m, we had to pass another high pass to get to La Paz. It was already dark so we decided to sleep in the car when we were again on 4100m.
But the weather waited with a bad surprise for us next morning. Everything was white and it was still snowing. A police car stopped and confirmed our bad thoughts, the pass was closed. And he told us also that no one will come to clean the roads. We have to wait for the sun. A few locals stopped by told us that this happens only 2 or 3 times a year but then the snow will stay for a few days. Jahoo :(
Then suddenly a truck stopped close to us and also a bus told us they will go and we should follow them. As it was still snowing and we don't want to get stucked in the middle of nowhere for days in our car, we decided to follow them.
And even though Stefan is used to drive mountains in snow, this was the hardest ride. 4wd cars didn't make it and we had to overtake a line of trucks and busses who got stuck and therefore blocked the whole road.
So happy when we made it, but the snow followed us till La Paz.
La Paz is also an extreme city. One part lays on over 4000m while the other is just on 3200m. Here Stefan found a part of Austria, the Teleferico huge cable car build by the company Doppelmayr. This cable car connects the city parts on 8 km and you have an amazing view!
